MAME Table - Shopping List

Shopping List Overview

I've split this 'what we'll need list into two sections. The firsts section covers items that it's unlikely you'll already own and covers the core items.  The second section lists more common (tool type) items that you'll need and possibly already own.

For both sections I've listed how the item will likely be used, links to purchasing information and a general description of why the item might/will be needed.

As I'm writing this information 'as I go along' and haven't finished building the table, some items are currently best guess and only foreseen as being needed.  As the work progresses, I'll update the information, thus it will become more refined over time.

As this is a JAMMA based system, no PC components are listed, but I've added 'MAME' notes as there are some cross-over areas and it might be helpful if you're planning on building a MAME box.

Purchase List

60 in 1 jamma pcb with 2 joysticks 16 buttons and jamma harness

Links: Ebay
Requirement Status: Required
Usage Notes: These items form to core of the internal workings. They can be bought separate, but I bought mine as a kit. I requested four black buttons and these I'll use to control the menus/extras.  From what I can see, none of the listed 60 games requires more than four buttons, so I doubt this will be a problem.
MAME Cross-Over: The buttons and joysticks would be needed. The wiring harness might be handy for general extra wiring, but other specific MAME (I-PAC) wiring solutions are available depending on what you're connecting to/from.  The Jamma board wouldn't be needed.

JAMMA ARCADE POWER SUPPLY UNIT

Links: Ebay
Requirement Status: Required
Usage Notes: Power for the Jamma board.
MAME Cross-Over: Not needed, a PC PSU would be used instead.

ARCADE MACHINE STEREO SOUND SPEAKER AMPLIFIER + 2 X GRILLS MAME / JAMMA

Links: Ebay
Requirement Status: Optional/Required
Usage Notes: The speakers are a required item (if you want sound), the amp was optional'ish.  The alternative was to buy some PC speakers and butcher them to get the components…. Not sure exactly how these will get wired-up yet, but they will come in… for something :).
MAME Cross-Over: From experience of building the last MANE box, I can see that these would have been used.

Monitor with VGA capabilities

Links: Ebay
Requirement Status: Required
Usage Notes: A friend of mine sold me a HP (HPL2208W) monitor for a very good price.
MAME Cross-Over: This would work for a MAME Box.

3 * IKEA 'lack' tables - Black

Links: Ikea
Requirement Status: Optional/Required

The bottom layer, 'table 1'
Usage Notes:  These tables are really cheap and virtually hollow.  They do have some strengthening cardboard on the inside, but that will be getting ripped out. The plan is to make a 'table sandwich': Table 1 will form the base after having it's legs lengthened (using table 2's legs) and most of its top cut out.  Table 2, the sandwich layer will be used to create space and height and will have most of its underside and top removed.  Table 3 will form the top layer, after having most of underside removed and a hole created for the monitor.  Time will tell if  layer 2 is needed for this JAMMA build, as less component space will be required than for a true MAME box.  I have seen other cocktails built into IKEA drawers and larger tables, but they were too big for my design plans or just didn't look right.
MAME Cross-Over: This would work for a MAME Box

120mm PC cooling Fan (NB Multiframe, S-Series, M12-S1) + Fan grill

Links: Ebay / http://www.blacknoise.com/en/site/page/products.it
Requirement Status: Recommended
Usage Notes: The heat generated inside the final table from the PSU, monitor and AMP can be a problem.  Any 120mm fan can be purchased, but not all fan are created equal and some are really noisy.  However, the recommended fan (NB Multiframe, S-Series, M12-S1) isn't quiet, it's reference class, benchmark silent.  Highly recommended.
MAME Cross-Over: This would work for a MAME Box.

6mm glass sheet, 55cm x 54 cm, edges polished

Links: Glass place
Requirement Status: Required
Usage Notes:  I had wanted to purchase a single table/item with a glass top, but after visting several 2nd-hand places and looking online over several months, nothing I could find was an ideal match/price/size combination.  All (and I mean all) of IKEAs current collection (winter 2012) contains no clear glass component (shelve, door, picture frame) that is 55cm x 55cm to match the tables. (Note, there is a picture frame that itself is the right size, but the glass within is only 48x48).  This glass sheet will sit on top of the tables and cover the monitor.  I got the glass 1cm smaller (on one side) than the tables (55cm x 54 cm) to ensure the flip-up control panels will sit flush with the edge of the table.  This might be something that gets improved in a future build and again, time will tell if this was a good idea.
MAME Cross-Over: This would work for a MAME Box.

Sticky backed, black vinyl Spray Paint

Links: Tile/Hobby/Craft Store
Requirement Status: Optional/Required
Usage Notes:  This is just a roll of black sticky-backed plastic.  It will be used to cover the bare wood of the control panels and the gap in the extended leg joints. I might make it poss to flip open the table, between table top 2 and 3 for easy access.  This will mean there will be a seam, but easy access to the inner workings.... again, time will tell how this plays out. (I'm currently in seam mode, having bought a lock to keep the top closed, but we'll see what happens)
Update: Having now built the Control Panels, it is recommended to spray paint them instead of using the sticky backed plastic.
MAME Cross-Over: This would work for a MAME Box

MDF Wood, 1/2 inch thick, meter'ish square

Links: IKEA/DIY place
Requirement Status: Required
Usage Notes:  This wood will be used to build the control panels that hosts the joysticks and buttons.  I'm a little vague at this shopping list stage as it isn't entirely clear how much will be needed.  {Update: Having now built the the control panels it's possible to elaborate on the required wood sizes. Each of the two constructed CPs measures W 18cm x L 23 cm x D 14.5 cm}  I bought a cheap TV/video/dvd cabinet (a "rundvik" model) from IKEA as it was in the discount area and I'll just butcher it for the required wood.  The reasoning for this 'wood' purchase was (a) I was already at IKEA thus saving me a trip to buy real wood, (b) it was at least as cheap as buying real wood, (c) some of the joints / box shapes are already built and strong, (d) it looked big enough for my guess'timated needs.
MAME Cross-Over: This would work for a MAME Box
{Post Build Update:} Each of the two constructed CPs measures W 18cm x L 23 cm x D 14.5 cm.

Hinges, screws and general stuff

Links: DIY Place
Requirement Status: Required
Usage Notes: These will be used to flip-up the control panels (pictures to follow) and generally put the table together. I'm not listing everything, it's enough to say you'll need a selection of screws, nails, fasteners and general DIY bits.
MAME Cross-Over: This would work for a MAME Box, dependent on how/where the joysticks/buttons are being located.

Wood drills, wood glue, wooden dowel plugs

Links: DIY Place
Requirement Status: Required
Usage Notes: As these will be required, I'm added then to the main list. I already had some of these items, but bought a wood drill set as I know it will come in handy for other projects/work
MAME Cross-Over: This would work for a MAME Box
